MeditatioN

Chinese martial arts train the body and spirit.

Meditation and breathing practices allow us to calm the mind, relieve stress, and become more relaxed and focused.

The Internal Work curriculum includes a variety of Nèi Gōng, Qi Gōng, Dǎo Yǐn, and Zhàn Zhuāng, practices to help you find stillness through meditation, cultivate your spirit, and improve your mental health and wellbeing.

Nèi Gong - 內功

Internal Skills’

Nèigōng refers to a Daoist process of inducing internal change and cultivating internal strength or skill. The process can be subdivided into a variety of specialist practices such as Nèidān Shù (Internal Alchemy), Qi Gōng (Breathing Skills), Dǎoyǐn (Guiding and Pulling), and Zhàn Zhuāng (Post Standing).

Common to these practices is an emphasis on breathing , concentration, relaxation and a contrast between mindful stillness and co-ordinated movement.

As Daoist internal arts, Xíng Yì Quán, and Tài Jí Quán, are constructed from Nèigōng practices. However, these practices are primarily centred around the development of internal power (Nèi jìn 內勁).

Qi GOng - 氣功

‘Breathing Skills’

Qìgōng is a Nèigōng system of breathing, movement, and meditation. This ancient practice involves the circulation and regulation of Qi (氣), which in the internal arts context refers to air, breath, energy, or vital force.

The Qìgōng system includes a variety of postures, co-ordinated movements, and visualisations that work to develop a set of revitalising breathing skills.

‘Guiding and Pulling’

Dǎoyǐn is an ancient Daoist Nèigōng system of personal cultivation that can be contrasted with the more common Qigong. Dǎoyǐn practices involve gently pulling open the joints and stimulating  Qi (氣) flow throughout the body. These stretching and lengthening exercises aim to purge stagnation from the body.

‘Stake Standing’

Zhàn Zhuāng is an internal martial arts practice that involves standing in static postures to develop body structure, alignment, and internal power.

When practiced correctly Stake standing increases physical strength, and conditions the joints and ligaments.
